Both are made by Lutron, both control lighting brilliantly, and both are far more reliable than the average smart bulb. The difference comes down to scale and ambition: Caséta is built for most homes and can be set up by a homeowner, while RadioRA 3 is a professionally programmed whole-home system for larger or more demanding projects. Here's how to tell which one you actually need.

The short answer

  • Caséta — Lutron's smart-lighting line for most homes. Supports up to about 75 devices, installs easily (homeowner-friendly, though we install it too), and works with Alexa, Apple Home, Google, Sonos, and Ring. The reliable, affordable entry into real Lutron lighting.
  • RadioRA 3 — Lutron's whole-home system for larger and luxury homes. Scales to hundreds of devices, adds premium keypads, tunable and color light, and motorized shade and fan control, and integrates with Control4 and Crestron. It requires professional programming by a certified Lutron installer.

What is Lutron Caséta?

Caséta is Lutron's wireless smart-lighting system aimed at everyday homes — roughly up to 2,500 square feet and about 75 devices. It uses Lutron's rock-solid Clear Connect wireless, pairs dimmers and switches with Pico remotes, and sets up through an app with a Smart Bridge. It's genuinely DIY-friendly, which is part of its appeal, and it plays nicely with the major voice and smart-home ecosystems. For an apartment, a condo, or a mid-sized home that wants dependable dimming and a few scenes without a big project, Caséta is often exactly enough.

What is Lutron RadioRA 3?

RadioRA 3 is Lutron's system for whole-home control of larger residences — comfortably up to around 7,500 square feet of coverage and hundreds of devices (up to 200 per processor, and more across multiple processors). Beyond scale, it unlocks Lutron's premium hardware: Sunnata dimmers, elegant multi-button keypads, Ketra tunable-white and full-color lighting, and control of motorized shades and fans. Crucially, RadioRA 3 is programmed by a certified installer using Lutron's professional design tools, and it integrates cleanly into whole-home platforms like Control4 and Crestron. It's the system behind the layered, circadian, "the house knows the time of day" lighting you see in high-end homes.

How they compare

  • Scale: Caséta tops out around 75 devices; RadioRA 3 scales into the hundreds. If your home is large or your plans are ambitious, Caséta's ceiling arrives faster than people expect.
  • Who installs it: Caséta is homeowner-installable (we're happy to do it too); RadioRA 3 requires professional programming by a certified Lutron installer.
  • Keypads and features: RadioRA 3 adds premium keypads, Ketra tunable and color light, and shade and fan control that Caséta doesn't offer.
  • Integration: Caséta connects to Alexa, Apple Home, Google, and Sonos; RadioRA 3 integrates into professional whole-home systems like Control4 and Crestron.
  • Home size: Caséta suits apartments and small-to-mid homes; RadioRA 3 suits larger and luxury homes.

Can you start with Caséta and upgrade later?

This is the question that saves people money — or costs them. Caséta and RadioRA 3 are separate systems, not a simple in-place upgrade, so moving from one to the other means replacing devices rather than flipping a switch. If you know your home is large or your lighting ambitions are high, it's usually smarter to start on RadioRA 3 than to outgrow Caséta and re-buy. If your needs are modest and likely to stay that way, Caséta is the honest, cost-effective choice. The key is planning the right system up front — ideally during a build or remodel, before drywall.

Which should you choose?

  • Apartment, condo, or mid-sized home; modest needs: Caséta.
  • Large or luxury home, premium keypads, tunable light, shades and whole-home integration: RadioRA 3.
  • Not sure how far you'll grow: talk to an installer before buying — the cost of choosing wrong is re-buying hardware.

Which Lutron system is best for a large home?

RadioRA 3. Its device capacity, premium keypads, tunable and color lighting, and whole-home integration are built for larger and luxury homes, where Caséta's smaller device limit would be a constraint.
